One of my favorite things to give (and receive) for a baby shower or child’s birthday is the gift of a book with a personal note written inside the book. My mom would always give us books with little notes in the front cover and I love finding older books with her handwritten notes. I recently stumbled on an inspirational book she gave me the day I left for Clemson. Another book she gave me, Mom Candy: 1,000 Quotes of Inspiration for Mothers, was one of my favorite books that I received as a new mom. Caroline’s name even came from a book my mom gave me about Caroline Kennedy that sits on our fireplace mantel. I’m sure when my mom gave me that book she didn’t realize that many years later her first granddaughter (her little sweet cheeks) would be the inspiration for her name!

Coleman loves to read all the books from his baby shower and first birthday filled with notes written to him from his favorite people. One of our favorite bedtime books is “Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things that Go.” On the inside cover, Ms. Jodi, a dear friend of my mom who was an educator for many years wrote the most thoughtful message to Coleman. She describes that on each page in the book there is a little character named, Goldbug hidden. That although the book is to teach you about cars and trucks and things that go, it will also teach you to search; to find things sometimes in the most unlikely places. There are many nights and days, we search for Goldbug, or “that tricky little guy,” as Coleman says and talk about of golden moments from our day. Spending our quality time together at the end of each day, reading and talking about books, characters, and our daily golden moments are the memories I’ll cherish all thanks to a sweet book, with a sweet message from a sweet friend who also treasures reading as much (or more!) then we do.
